St Petersburg 8 Hour Inshore Fishing Charter

Looking for a full day on the water targeting some of Tampa Bay's most sought-after species? This eight-hour inshore charter with Sports Coast Inshore Charters gives you and up to three friends the perfect opportunity to experience St Petersburg's world-class fishing scene. Running from mid-April through August, this trip takes advantage of the season's hottest bite when Snook, Redfish, Tarpon, Grey Snapper, and Spanish Mackerel are feeding aggressively in our productive inshore waters. At $1,000 for your group, you're getting serious value for a private, full-day adventure that's paced just right – no rushing, no crowds, just quality time on the water with fish that'll make your day.

What to Expect on the Water

This isn't your typical half-day rush job. Eight hours gives us the flexibility to really work the water right, adjusting our game plan as conditions change throughout the day. We'll start early to take advantage of the morning bite, then adapt our approach as the sun climbs and fish behavior shifts. The beauty of St Petersburg's inshore waters is the variety – one minute you're working mangrove shorelines for Snook, the next you're drifting grass flats for Redfish or setting up on structure for Snapper. Your captain knows these waters like the back of his hand and will put you on fish based on tides, weather, and what's been biting. The relaxed pace means we can take time to really work productive spots instead of constantly running and gunning. Plus, when you hook into a big Tarpon or that slot Snook you've been dreaming about, you'll have plenty of time to savor the fight.

Techniques & Tackle

We fish smart here, matching our approach to conditions and target species. Light tackle is the name of the game – it's way more fun feeling every headshake and run on gear that lets the fish show their stuff. Depending on what we're after and where we find them, we'll employ everything from bottom fishing over structure for Snapper to sight casting Redfish on shallow flats. Trolling comes into play when we're covering water looking for Spanish Mackerel or when Tarpon are rolling in deeper channels. Fly fishing opportunities pop up regularly, especially when we find tailing Reds or glass-calm conditions with cooperative Snook. All your rods, reels, tackle, bait, and licenses are handled – just show up ready to fish. The captain will match your gear to the situation, whether that's throwing live bait under mangroves or working artificial lures along grass edges. Every angler gets personal attention, whether you're a seasoned pro or picking up a rod for the first time.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Spanish Mackerel are speed demons that'll test your reflexes and put a serious bend in your rod. These silver bullets typically run 1-3 pounds in our waters, but don't let their size fool you – they're lightning fast and fight way above their weight class. Peak season runs from late spring into summer, and when they're here, they're here in numbers. We'll often find them relating to bait schools in 8-15 feet of water, and they're suckers for fast-moving spoons and small jigs. What makes them special is their willingness to bite – when the Mackerel are around, everyone on the boat catches fish.

Snook are the gold standard of inshore fishing, and St Petersburg's got some of the best Snook fishing in Florida. These ambush predators love structure – docks, mangroves, bridges, anywhere they can hide and pounce on unsuspecting bait. They're smart, moody, and absolutely explosive when hooked. A slot-sized Snook (28-33 inches) is a trophy fish that'll give you everything you can handle on light tackle. They're most active during low-light periods, which is why our long charter format works so well – we can hit them during multiple feeding windows. The way a big Snook clears the water when hooked is something every angler needs to experience.

Grey Snapper, or Mangrove Snapper as locals call them, are the perfect combination of tasty and tricky. These bottom-dwellers are structure-oriented fish that require finesse and patience. They've got excellent eyesight and can be incredibly line-shy, making them a favorite target for anglers who like a technical challenge. Most of our Snapper run 12-16 inches, perfect for the dinner table. They're year-round residents, but summer months see them most active and feeding aggressively. The key is getting your bait down quickly in the strike zone before they have time to inspect your offering too closely.

Tarpon are simply the kings of inshore fishing – there's nothing like the experience of hooking into a 50-100 pound silver giant that can clear 6 feet of water. These prehistoric beasts migrate through our area during summer months, often rolling on the surface and giving away their location. They're incredibly strong, surprisingly smart, and absolutely relentless fighters. Most anglers are thrilled just to get a jump or two before these fish throw the hook, but when everything comes together and you land one, it's a fishing memory that lasts forever. We find them around bridges, channels, and nearshore areas where they're feeding on schools of baitfish.

Redfish are the bread and butter of inshore fishing, and rightfully so. These copper-colored bruisers are willing biters that put up a dogged, bulldog fight. Bull Reds over 27 inches are catch-and-release only, but they're the most fun you can have on light tackle. Slot fish (18-27 inches) are perfect for the table and still give you a great scrap. We target them on grass flats, around oyster bars, and in shallow backcountry areas where they root around for crabs and shri

Grey Snapper

Grey snapper, also called mangrove snapper, are crafty fish that keep anglers on their toes. These copper-colored opportunists typically run 12-16 inches inshore, though we occasionally see some pushing 3-4 pounds. They love hanging around any kind of structure - docks, bridges, rock piles, and especially mangrove roots in 5-20 feet of water. Spring through summer is prime time when they're most active in our warmer waters. What makes them fun is they're smart and cautious, so landing one takes some finesse. Once hooked, they make strong runs toward cover. Guests appreciate that they're excellent eating with sweet, white meat that's perfect for fish tacos. My advice: use the lightest leader you can get away with and let your live shrimp sit still on the bottom. These fish are spooky - too much movement and they'll disappear.

Grey Snapper

Redfish

Redfish are hands-down one of the most exciting fish to target in shallow water. These copper-colored bruisers typically run 18-27 inches in our area, cruising grass flats, oyster bars, and mangrove shorelines in water so shallow you can sometimes see their backs. Spring through summer is prime time when they're actively feeding in the shallows. What makes reds special is their power - once hooked, they make long, steady runs that really test your drag system. The famous black spot near their tail helps you identify them, and they're excellent table fare with firm, sweet meat. Guests love sight-fishing for them on the flats - it's like hunting. Best local tip: look for "nervous water" or slight surface disturbances where reds are feeding. A well-placed live shrimp or gold spoon in front of a cruising fish usually gets their attention quickly.

Redfish

Snook

Snook are the ultimate inshore gamefish and a real favorite on our charters. These ambush predators typically range 18-28 inches around St Pete, hiding along mangrove shorelines, docks, bridges, and oyster bars in 2-10 feet of water. They've got that distinctive black lateral line and can absolutely explode when hooked - expect multiple jumps and drag-screaming runs. Our season runs April through August when they're most active in warmer water. What makes them special is their fierce fight and the challenge they present - they're structure-oriented and spooky, so it takes skill to get them to bite. The reward is worth it though; they're fantastic eating with firm, white meat. Here's a local trick: cast live shrimp or pinfish tight to structure, then be patient. Let your bait sit - snook will study it before committing to strike.

Snook

Spanish Mackerel

Spanish mackerel are fast, aggressive fish that make our spring and summer trips exciting. These silver speedsters typically run 1-3 pounds inshore, with their distinctive yellow spots making them easy to identify. You'll find them schooling near the surface around structures, grass flats, and channel edges in 10-30 feet of water. They hit hard and make blistering runs that'll test your drag. Peak season here is May through July when water temps climb above 70 degrees. Guests love them because they're plentiful, fight well on light tackle, and make excellent table fare with white, flaky meat that's perfect grilled or blackened. Pro tip: when you see diving birds, get there fast - Spanish mackerel feed aggressively under baitfish schools, and the action can be non-stop if you arrive while they're still feeding.

Spanish Mackerel

Tarpon

Tarpon are the ultimate bucket-list fish and why many anglers travel to Florida. These silver giants range from 50-150 pounds in our area, cruising shallow flats, channels, and around bridges in 5-15 feet of water. Late spring through summer is peak season here, especially May and June when they're migrating through in large numbers. What makes tarpon special isn't just their size - it's watching a 6-foot fish launch itself completely out of the water multiple times during the fight. The aerial show is something you'll never forget. Most folks release them since they're not great eating, but the fight alone is worth the trip. They're also ancient fish, some living 50+ years. Key tip: when a tarpon jumps, bow to the fish by dropping your rod tip toward the water. This gives slack and prevents them from throwing the hook during their acrobatics.
